Why Does My Body Crack and Pop in Pilates? Should I Be Worried?

If you’ve ever flowed through Pilates or any workout for that matter and heard your body make cracking or popping sounds, you’re not alone. I get asked about this a lot and quite often my clients are worried. Many people especially notice little clicks in their hips, shoulders, knees, or spine during class. It can feel strange, and sometimes even a little worrying but in most cases, these sounds are completely normal. Read on for a little explanation as to why...
1. Gas bubbles in the joints
The most common reason for cracking is the release of tiny gas bubbles within the synovial fluid that lubricates your joints. It’s similar to when you “crack” your knuckles - pressure changes inside the joint create that familiar popping noise.
2. Tendons or ligaments moving
As you stretch and strengthen, tendons and ligaments can glide over bones. When they snap back into place, you may hear or feel a click. This is particularly common in the hips (“snapping hip”) or shoulders.
